The Defiant Democrat After Primary Defeat

Defeated Democrats and the Challenge of Moving Forward

In the wake of a primary election, many defeated candidates have quickly shifted their focus to other causes. For instance, Francesca Hong supported David Crowley for Wisconsin governor within 12 hours of her loss. Similarly, Haley Stevens endorsed Abdul El-Sayed despite previously accusing him of antisemitism. Alex Vindman even allowed his primary opponent, Angie Nixon, to use his large email list to raise funds for her campaign.

However, outgoing Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) has not followed this pattern. Instead of moving on swiftly, she has continued to speak out about the political landscape in Texas, raising questions about her role in the Democratic Party’s efforts to win the Senate race.

A Complex Relationship with Talarico

Crockett endorsed James Talarico the day after he defeated her in Texas’ U.S. Senate primary in March and initially agreed to campaign for him. However, she has since appeared to distance herself from that commitment. Instead, she has made comments suggesting that Black voters are not fully behind Talarico, which has raised concerns about whether her remarks could undermine the Democratic effort to secure the Senate majority.

On Thursday night, Crockett reiterated her pledge to support downballot candidates instead. She told CNN’s Laura Coates, “Black voters are practical. So at the end of the day, I don’t know that they’re going to have to be the most excited.” While she acknowledged the importance of voter excitement, her comments have drawn criticism from some within the party.

Earlier this month, she expressed doubt about Talarico’s chances, even as his fundraising efforts have surged and polls consistently show him leading the GOP nominee, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Distrust and Doubt

During an appearance on the “Front Page” podcast, Crockett said, “I personally don’t feel like the excitement necessarily exists within the Black community.” She argued that Black voters tend to be more distrustful of politicians they don’t know well, including Talarico. She suggested that her energy is better spent supporting Black candidates in lower-level races.

Her comments have been met with mixed reactions. Some Republicans have seized on her words, while others in the Democratic Party have criticized them as undermining the campaign. Most polls indicate that Talarico holds a significant lead among Black voters, with a Fox News survey showing him at 87% to 13%.

Reactions from Within the Party

Kendall Scudder, chair of the Texas Democratic Party, told Wartabrita.com, “The people I talk to seem very excited, but you know, her lived experience is different than mine.” Despite this, recent polling by the University of Texas/Texas Politics Project found that 60% of Black voters have a favorable opinion of Talarico, and 69% would support him if the Senate election were held immediately.

Patrick Gaspard, a former Obama aide, responded strongly to Crockett’s comments on social media, writing, “At some point, we have to ask who exactly you’re working for.” He emphasized that Black voters are highly engaged and that Talarico is a strong candidate who appeals across Texas.

Other Democrats have echoed similar sentiments. Rodericka Applewhaite, a Democratic operative, wrote on X, “At this point I’d respect Crockett more if she just admitted that a settled vendetta is more important than beating Paxton.”

A Broader Context

Shea Smith, a Houston-based Democratic strategist, noted that Crockett’s comments may be more focused on the broader statewide ticket in Texas, which includes gubernatorial candidate Gina Hinojosa, lieutenant governor nominee Vikki Goodwin, and attorney general nominee Nathan Johnson. He suggested that Black voters may not be familiar with these candidates, which could affect their enthusiasm.

Despite the criticism, some Black Democrats in Texas acknowledge that the party has historically underrepresented Black voters. Rep. Christian Menefee (D-Texas) stated, “I don’t think anybody in this party disagrees that Black voters have been taken for granted for a long time.”

Menefee also praised Talarico’s outreach efforts, noting that his campaign has made extensive efforts to engage with Black voters. “You’re never going to catch Ken Paxton coming to a Black neighborhood in any city in Texas,” he said.

A Divisive Primary

The Senate primary was marked by debates over Talarico’s electability, with racial undertones. A Crockett supporter claimed Talarico had referred to Colin Allred as “a mediocre Black man,” a comment that angered Allred. Talarico later clarified that he meant Allred ran a mediocre campaign in his 2024 Senate race against Ted Cruz.

Even though Crockett endorsed Talarico, her apparent reluctance to campaign for him raised eyebrows. Her campaign had also challenged Republican-led changes to polling locations, claiming they disenfranchised voters.

A Focus on the Big Picture

In a June selfie video, Crockett urged supporters to focus on defeating Paxton rather than on her own actions. “If you have this urge to be like, ‘Oh, Jasmine this, Jasmine that,’ maybe use that energy towards ‘Ken Paxton this, Ken Paxton that,’” she said.

In the “Front Page” interview, she also emphasized that she does not have control over Black voters in Texas. “There are those that believe I have an underground railroad popping off in Texas, and that I’ve been telling all the Black folk on the underground railroad, ‘Don’t do this or don’t do that,’ and it’s so far from the truth,” she said.

Talarico’s Support for Crockett

Talarico has defended Crockett throughout the campaign, stating, “People need to leave the congresswoman alone. She is doing incredible work. She is a leader in our state, in our country, and she deserves the utmost respect.”
