WSJ Dollar Index Drops 0.03% to 95.54

Overview of the WSJ Dollar Index

The WSJ Dollar Index experienced a slight decline today, falling by 0.03 points or 0.03% to reach 95.54. This marks a downward trend over the past three trading days, with the index being down on two of those occasions. The index has also seen a significant drop from its record close of 105.14, which was recorded on Tuesday, September 27, 2022, with a decrease of 9.14%. Additionally, it is currently off by 2.24% from its 52-week high of 97.73, which was achieved on Wednesday, June 24, 2026.

On the other hand, the index has shown an increase of 2.03% from its 52-week low of 93.64, which occurred on Tuesday, January 27, 2026. The index has also risen by 0.48% compared to its value from 52 weeks ago. For the month-to-date period, the index is down by 0.58%, and for the year-to-date, it has decreased by 0.39 points or 0.40%. These figures are based on data collected at 5 p.m. ET.

Australian Dollar Hits Three-Month High

In the foreign exchange market, the Australian dollar reached a three-month high against the U.S. dollar. This development comes as forex investors focus on seeking carry opportunities. According to Societe Generale’s Kit Juckes, the Australian dollar is a popular target for carry trades due to Australia’s official cash rate of 4.35%. Despite concerns about weaker Chinese growth and potential oil supply issues through the Strait of Hormuz, the market’s current focus on carry appears to be overriding these concerns.

The Australian dollar increased by 0.3% to reach $0.7195, according to LSEG data. This rise highlights the ongoing interest in currencies that offer higher yields, even amid global economic uncertainties.

U.S. Factors Influencing the Japanese Yen

Developments in the U.S. are expected to play a significant role in influencing the Japanese yen, as the effects of recent forex interventions begin to subside. Strategists at UBS Global Wealth Management note that the U.S. and Japan conducted coordinated forex intervention on August 3, which temporarily pushed the dollar to as low as 155.21 yen. However, the dollar has since recovered some of its losses and is currently up 0.1% at 159.48 yen.

A resilient U.S. economy and the possibility of the Federal Reserve raising interest rates in the coming months are seen as supportive factors for the dollar against the yen. However, if upcoming data suggests the Fed may remain on hold, the dollar’s strength could moderate.

Japanese Yen and BOJ Signals

The Japanese yen showed minimal movement as the Bank of Japan (BOJ) sent mixed signals regarding potential rate hikes. Traders were looking to comments by BOJ’s Himino for reassurance that a September rate hike might occur. While the yen’s slight weakening indicates some disappointment, the tone of his comments aligns with a policy board considering faster tightening.

Himino emphasized the need to be more alert to inflation risks, which analysts interpret as a sign that the pace of rate hikes could increase. He also confirmed that the BOJ does not require full data on past hikes before moving again. With nearly all rate-hike pricing intact, the BOJ seems to have given a clear signal of intent.

Potential Impact of BOJ Officials’ Comments

If BOJ officials signal caution regarding further rate increases, the Japanese yen could face additional pressure. ING’s Francesco Pesole notes that the most plausible path for the dollar to stay below 160 yen would involve the U.S. Federal Reserve showing a preference for keeping interest rates on hold rather than raising them in the coming months.

Currently, the dollar is trading steady at 159.30 yen. Investors are closely watching for any signs of a shift in the BOJ’s stance, as this could significantly impact the yen’s performance.

Euro Stability Amid Oil Price Containment

The euro remains stable against the dollar as crude oil prices continue to be contained. Brent crude is currently down 0.5% at $87.38. MUFG’s Derek Halpenny notes that the price of crude oil continues to defy expectations of sharper price rises. The energy price story will be an important backdrop as G-10 central banks prepare for a busy month of meetings.

However, concerns about natural gas storage in Europe remain a key issue. The risk of higher inflation and weaker growth in Europe could potentially weaken the euro against the dollar in the coming weeks. The euro is currently unchanged at $1.1651.

Dollar Stability Ahead of Jackson Hole Meeting

The U.S. dollar is trading steadily in early European trade as investors await the Kansas City Federal Reserve’s annual Jackson Hole meeting, which begins Thursday. Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh is scheduled to speak on Friday. Investors are hoping for clarity on the Fed’s monetary policy thinking, although expectations are low in an era where forward guidance has been reduced.

The DXY index, which measures the dollar’s value against a basket of currencies, is unchanged at 99.145.

Bitcoin’s Rise Amid Dollar Debasement Trade

Bitcoin has seen a rise, staying close to multimonth highs but remaining below the $80,000 key level. This increase is driven by investors seeking alternative investments away from the U.S. dollar, often referred to as the dollar debasement trade. Concerns about high levels of U.S. debt and potential prolonged inflation are prompting this shift.

Cryptocurrencies have also gained traction following the U.S. Treasury’s announcement to double its purchases of longer-term securities last week. Bitcoin climbed 0.5% to $78,811, although it remains well below Tuesday’s three-month peak of $81,237, according to LSEG data.

Yen Strength Amid BOJ Speech

The yen strengthened slightly against most G-10 and Asian currencies as traders awaited BOJ Deputy Governor Himino’s speech. Himino is scheduled to meet with local leaders in Saitama, Japan. His speech will provide an opportunity for the BoJ to validate or push back against market expectations for a 25bp interest rate hike in September.

Himino may signal an imminent rate hike by emphasizing upside inflation risks or the need to avoid falling “behind the curve,” according to CBA’s Carol Kong. The U.S. dollar edges 0.1% lower to 159.15 yen, while the euro is 0.1% lower at Y185.49, and the Australian dollar is little changed at Y114.16, according to LSEG data.
